ENVIRONMENTS

The nursery is situated within the grounds of Mossgate Primary School, but is an independent setting, run totally separately from the school. The nursery opened in January 2016 in a newly constructed building, which was purpose made to our own design and requirements. Our environment is thoughtfully planned by the owner with four adjoining playrooms where activities take place to support the learning and development of all children. There is also a sensory room in which the children spend time during every session. There is a large accessible and secure outdoor area, with decking and grass, which is to be partially covered to allow outdoor play even in poor weather. There is also an area known as the Gruffalo Wood where children help to grow vegetables and flowers in the summer. There is free flow between the outdoor and indoor area so that the children can access outdoor play whenever they want to. A wide range of large and small play equipment is available outdoors, including an outdoor kitchen, gardening area, playhouse and slide. In the setting we thread the outdoor learning environment into the individual child’s learning and development.
GRUFFALO ROOM

This room is used by our Wise Owls and Gruffalos (3 and 4-year-olds), who are encouraged to get more actively involved in their learning and to make decisions. We develop their creative and critical thinking, balancing the need for children to learn about risks and safety with how to make good choices and how to stick to boundaries through play and learning.  The room is also designed to be used for snack times and mealtimes, where children are developing their own independence in feeding and drinking by themselves. The Wise Owls and Gruffalos have their own toilets and nappy changing facilities within the room, which encourages children’s self-care and independence. The room opens out onto a covered play area, providing continuous indoor and outdoor provision for all types of weather.

OWL ROOM

This room focuses on expressive arts and design. Our role play area is changed termly to focus on different aspects of our local community. There is a water play area and creative area, with plenty of opportunities for the children to experiment and explore. The room opens out onto a covered play area, providing continuous indoor and outdoor provision for all types of weather.

FOREST ROOM
The room is used for our Little Acorns (2 year-olds). This environment is designed around the toddler’s emerging sense of identity. It’s a space where they can feel safe and supported. We provide a variety of interesting resources that are familiar to the children, so they can experiment and make sense of their immediate world. Routines are important for developing independence, so we provide opportunities to support each child’s individual needs. We encourage children to tackle routine tasks themselves, but still have nurturing practitioners on-hand for one-on-one time to provide comfort and reassurance. The Little Acorns have their own toilet and nappy changing facilities within the room, which encourages children’s self-care. The room opens out onto a covered play area, providing continuous indoor and outdoor provision in all types of weather. They also have access onto our all-weather grassed area.
SENSORY ROOM
Our sensory room provides a calm and tranquil atmosphere for children to experience during their time at nursery. We use our sensory room to provide a calm, relaxing and safe place to explore.  The lighting eases children’s anxieties, using the sensory room can help children to settle at nursery and make their experience more enjoyable. A beautiful calming environment used by all our children.
ENERGY ROOM
(new for 2024-2025)

The room is designed for indoor physical development to develop gross motor and balancing skills, we focus on activities such as meditation, stretching and yoga. The children listen to calm classical music in the Energy Room which provides a relaxing atmosphere for the children and promotes children’s mental health and wellbeing through movement and music. Mindful practices can encourage kindness in children and help them to manage their emotions. We use Henry, our empathy doll during mindfulness sessions as children relate well to him through play and exploration.

OUTSIDE PLAY AREAS

Our extensive outdoor play areas provide continuous provision of rich, nourishing learning opportunities for all children according to their ages and stages of development with a focus being on that of children’s interests. All rooms from the nursery has continuous access to the outdoor area, and covers all areas of the areas of learning providing awe and wonder for all, with a focus being upon following the children’s interests.
We have a grass area outside which predominantly enhances gross motor development using balancing beams, trikes and a large chalkboard. We promote and support the children in taking risks whilst ensuring that they are kept safe at all times whilst providing purposeful challenges to the children for example walking on the logs and using them as stepping stones supports and develops balance, coordination, focus and turn taking.
Large sunshades are used during the warm weather to protect children from sun.

Our Little acorns have an area which is under cover to protect from the elements, whilst ensuring that children have continuous access to the outdoors also. Nursery coats are provided, and the children are supported to become independent in putting on and taking off their coat. There is access to water and sand play at all times outside and there is an inviting nature kitchen which supports language development and personal social and emotional skills too.

GRUFFALO WOOD
Here at Mossgate Day Nursery we have created our very own amazing Gruffalo Wood, where, in small groups, we embrace and connect to nature every day. All the plants and flowers are checked against our nursery risk assessment, so everyone stays safe. Children develop confidence in independently putting on their gardening gloves, pushing the wheelbarrow and shown how to safely use gardening tools and learn the correct names. Growing our own flowers and vegetables enable all the children to take on an active role and learn about how vegetables and flowers grow. We look and explore under logs for different bugs, and we have developed a habitat for many kinds of birds. We use our daily nature log to count and identify the many different living creatures that we can see and find. Our outdoor classroom is a beautiful place to connect with nature at any time of year
